TV stand-up Michael McIntyre looks set to see off competition from big budget blockbusters including the latest Harry Potter and Transformers films to scoop the coveted number one spot in this Christmas’ DVD chart.
Experts at Tesco Entertainment predict that next week the Comedy and TV DVD chart will outsell the Film chart for the first time ever, fuelled by the runaway success of stand-ups such as McIntyre and Lee Evans, as well as hit TV shows such as Gavin and Stacey.
This comes as sales of classic comedy boxsets grew by an incredible 800% year on year, with Only Fools and Horses, The Vicar of Dibley and Fawlty Towers among the top sellers.
Keith Metcalfe, Tesco DVD Buying Manager said: “Customers are clearly looking to have a laugh this Christmas and in these gloomy economic times who can blame them? For a fraction of the ticket price to a show you can watch your favourite comedians again and again on DVD. We all know you can’t rely on crackers for your Christmas Day laughs so why not settle down with a comedy classic instead?”
