Dr Helene Roberts, Head of Packaging, Food, Marks & Spencer, said:
“We’re really disappointed with the report, which does not reflect reality. From our independently audited data, we know that 91% of our food packaging is recyclable. By 2012, we want to reach 100%.
The LGA has chosen to only look at a skewed sample of 29 products out of our 5,500 lines, which are not representative. The real issue at the moment is the inconsistency in recycling facilities across the UK.
We all have a part to play in tackling packaging – retailers, manufacturers, local and national government, as well as consumers. However, further improvements to recycling across the UK are limited by the current facilities provided by local authorities, which is why we’ve been working closely with the LGA, as referred to in the report, to help create a more consistent approach to recycling across the UK.”
Current overview of disposability of all M&S packing:
Below is a summary of all the materials M&S uses in its food packaging and how recyclable it is based on the facilities available in the majority of Local Authorities. This information has been independently audited by Ernst & Young.
Key (based on WRAP categories): ‘widely recycled’ – 65% and above of local authorities ‘check local’ – between 20 – 65% of local authorities‘not currently recycled’ – less than 20% of local authorities
Plan A: We have four clear packaging commitments under Plan A:
• We will reduce our non-glass product packaging by 25% by 2012• We will use only recyclable or compostable packaging by 2012• All our packaging will also carry clear and honest labelling to indicate its recyclability• We will increase the use of sustainable raw materials in our packaging
Progress: As we continue to make progress against our Plan A packaging commitments, we will provide updates on our website www.marksandspencer.com/PlanA
