35 jobs at new Sainsbury’s Leeds Headingley store

Sainsbury’s will open the doors to a new store in Leeds Headingley on Wednesday 19th August 2009. The building was acquired from Somerfield in May 2009 and 35 new jobs have been created alongside the 60 colleagues who will be transferring from Somerfield. The 11,000 square foot store has a bakery, an ATM and ten self-scan checkouts for customers with only a few items.
Long-serving colleagues, Barbara Carroll and Jenny Cockroft will perform red carpet duties and cut the ribbon to officially open the new supermarket at 8.45am. Barbara and Jenny have spent over 50 years at the store between them and have worked there since it was owned by Safeway. Barbara said: “We’re delighted to be asked to open the new store and that our 50 combined years as colleagues have been recognised like this. I can’t wait to start working with the new team at Sainsbury’s!”
Deputy store manager Becky Lowrey, who will be opening the new Sainsbury’s said: “We’re proud of our new store but the best part of opening is getting to know the local community. It’s been great meeting new people and we’re looking forward to making a positive difference here. We’ve already started this process by redecorating the hall at Shire Oak Primary School and repainting the ‘Buddy Bench’ in their playground. We’ve also mucked in at North Leeds Community Nursery by refurbishing their fences and sheds.”
Doors will open at 9.00am and the first customer in store will be presented with a bouquet of flowers by Becky Lowrey.
