Operation Elf transport patrols

Northumbria Police

11 December 2009

Police in North Tyneside are stepping up patrols in busy public transport interchanges as part of Operation Elf to safeguard the public during the Christmas period.
More uniform offices will be on patrol at peak times to provide reassurance and deter thieves from targeting shoppers.
Chief Inspector Max Black, North Tyneside Area Command said: "We know people make more journeys now whether to do Christmas shopping, to socialise or to visit family and friends which is why we're putting more officers out on patrol.  The public will see our presence at Metro and bus stations as well as taxi ranks in order to reduce crime and disorder.
"Our message to criminals is simple - don't commit crime here. Officers are monitoring these busy areas and can quickly step in to deal with any offences or disorder.
"We will tackle the minority of people who cause problems and target known offenders so we can safeguard the majority of law abiding travellers."
Officers will be keeping a sharp eye out for any drunken or violent behaviour, so it can also be swiftly dealt with.
Chief Inspector Black added: "We want North Tyneside travellers to have safe journeys and know that our officers are patrolling these areas, should they need our help.
"We'd also remind the travelling public to keep their possessions safe and to make sure their purses and wallets are kept secure in fastened bags and zipped pockets to prevent opportunist theft."
