The work will be carried out in phases with phase three set to take place next week: Phase 3, Wednesday 3 to Friday 5 August – closure of the northbound carriageway between the A1(M) junction 10, north of Baldock, and the A1/A603 Sandy roundabout. Northbound traffic will be diverted off the A1(M) north of Baldock, westbound on the A507 to Clophill, north on the A6 to join the A421 eastbound at the Elstow junction and re-join the A1 at the Black Cat roundabout, at Wyboston. There will be two further phases of overnight closures from Monday 8 August until the work is completed by 13 August, weather permitting. A5 MILTON KEYNES OVERNIGHT CLOSURES FOR MAINTENANCE WORKWork to renew road markings and central studs on the A5 between Sheep Lane roundabout and Redmoor Roundabout will be carried out over five nights from Monday 1 August. The northbound carriageway will be closed overnight between 9pm and 6am in two phases with clearly signed diversion routes in place: during phase one, between Sheep Lane and Kellys Kitchen roundabouts, traffic will be diverted off the A5 north of Chalk Hill on to the A505 westbound to join the A4146 northbound and re-join the A5 at Kellys Kitchen. During phase two, between Kellys Kitchen and Redmoor roundabouts, traffic will be diverted onto Watling Street to join Bletcham Way at Denbigh roundabout and then re-join the A5 at Redmoor roundabout. A11 THETFORD BYPASS SOUTHBOUND OVERNIGHT CARRIAGEWAY CLOSUREA scheme to carry out carriageway resurfacing and repairs to the Little Ouse river bridge on the A11 at Thetford will start on Tuesday 2 August for six week day nights, weather permitting. The work will involve a full closure of the southbound carriageway between Mundford Road roundabout (A134/A1066) and Brandon Road roundabout (B1107/A134) over six week day nights from 8pm until 6am. Southbound traffic will be diverted off the A11 at the A11/A1075 Watton/Thetford roundabout, follow the A1075 into Thetford, and back to the A11 at the Brandon Road roundabout. A11 CAMBRIDGESHIRE SOUTHBOUND OVERNIGHT CARRIAGEWAY CLOSURE There will be a full closure of the southbound carriageway overnight for seven nights from Tuesday 2 August between Six Mile Bottom and the M11 junction 9a. The closure will allow maintenance work, including road markings and stud renewal, to be carried out between 8pm and 6am Monday to Thursday nights. Southbound traffic will be diverted along the A14 westbound to Girton interchange and then onto the M11 southbound. Traffic wishing to access the A11 will be diverted off the M11 at junction 10 (Duxford) then take the A505 eastbound to rejoin the A11 northbound at the Abington junction. A14 J28 CAMBRIDGESHIRE SLIPROAD RESURFACING Work to resurface the westbound entry and exit sliproads on the A14 at junction 28 (Boxworth/Swavesey) will be carried out over two nights on Wednesday 3 and Thursday 4 August. The sliproads will be closed while the work is taking place between 9pm and 6am, along with lane 1 of the westbound carriageway past the works area. Westbound traffic wishing to exit the A14 will be diverted to junction 26 (St Ives) to return eastbound and exit at junction 28. Traffic wishing to join the A14 westbound will be diverted eastbound to double back at junction 29 (Bar Hill).A120 ESSEX, MARKS FARM ROUNDABOUT IMPROVEMENT WORKWork will start on Monday 1 August for 45 weekday nights (8pm to 6am only), weather permitting, to improve traffic flows around Marks Farm roundabout on the A120 near Braintree. The work is being carried out as a condition of planning permission for a supermarket expansion nearby. The dual section of the A120 eastbound approaching the roundabout will be reduced to one lane for the duration of the works and four way temporary traffic lights will be in place to control traffic around the roundabout as required during the overnight works. This work is expected to be complete by mid-October.ONGOING WORK M1 MILTON KEYNES PARAPET REPLACEMENTWork to replace existing parapets on three bridges over the M1 between junctions 13 and 15 near Milton Keynes started in January. The work is currently being carried out 24 hours a day on Brogborough Interchange (junction 13) with two lanes running, one in each direction. The work is due to be completed by Thursday 4 August, weather permitting. M1 J10 TO J13 BEDFORDSHIRE HARD SHOULDER RUNNING SCHEME The following work is being carried out as part of the M1 J10 to J13 Managed Motorway scheme to provide additional capacity by opening up the hard shoulder as a running lane. There will be overnight sliproad closures at Junctions 10 and 11 from Monday 1 August as follows: Monday 1 August: junction 11, southbound entry sliproad;Wednesday 3 August: junction 11, southbound exit sliproad;Thursday 4 August: junction 11, northbound exit sliproad;Friday 5 August: junction 11, northbound entry sliproad;Saturday 6 August: junction 10, northbound entry sliproad and junction 11 southbound entry sliproad. A contraflow is in operation on the M1 between junctions 12 and 13. During peak hours three lanes will remain open in both directions. A contraflow remains in operation from north of Junction 11 to Junction 10, diverting a lane of southbound traffic onto the northbound carriageway. Traffic on the northbound carriageway is using the hard shoulder as an additional lane. This allows for three lanes of traffic in each direction during the day whilst work takes place. This will continue until July 2011. There are currently hard shoulder closures between Junctions 11 and 12, with a speed restriction of 50 mph. In addition, the same speed restriction is in force to junctions 10 and 13. The enforced 50mph speed limit is there for the safety of the travelling public and the workforce on site. This traffic management is in place for the work on the Hard Shoulder Running scheme to reduce congestion and improve safety on the 15 mile stretch of the M1 in Bedfordshire. Motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys whilst the road works are taking place.A1 CAMBRIDGESHIRE LAYBY IMPROVEMENTSWork to improve the Woolley layby near Alconbury started on Monday 25 July. The work will be carried out over eight days 24 hours a day until completion on Thursday 4 August, weather permitting. While the work is being carried out the layby will be closed. SPEED LIMIT ON A1 SOUTHBOUND AND NORTHBOUND NEAR PETERBOROUGHA 50mph speed restriction has been introduced on the southbound and northbound carriageway of the A1 at Water Newton while investigations are carried out on the central reservation.A14 CAMBRIDGESHIRE MAINTENANCE AND SAFETY WORKWork is continuing on the westbound carriageway between Milton (J33) and Histon (J32) to repair the embankments, install a new verge safety barrier and close the existing layby. This work will continue until late August and involves 24hour narrowed lanes and a 50mph speed restriction in place. A14 STOWMARKET BRIDGE REPAIRS Work continues on Stowupland Road Bridge over the A14 at Stowmarket affecting the A14 and B1115. There will be a 50mph speed restriction on the A14 in both directions between Junction 50 Cedars Interchange and Junction 49 Tothill Interchange, 24 hours a day for the duration of the work. A contraflow will be in operation on the westbound carriageway when traffic flows are lighter, every night between 8pm and 6am. There will be a full closure of the A14 eastbound on two weekday nights towards the end of the work in late August to remove the traffic management, dates to be advised. Traffic will be diverted via the A1120 and A1308 through Stowmarket on these two nights. A14 SUFFOLK IMPROVEMENT WORK AT BEYTON Work continues for one more night on Monday 1 August from 8pm to 6am on the scheme to resurface and improve the A14 near Beyton. The work will require the closure of one lane only, with traffic led in convoy past the works area at 10 mph. There will be a 50 mph speed restriction in place on approaches to the works area. It will take place between Moreton Hall interchange (junction 44) and Thurston Road underbridge (junction 46). The eastbound off sliproad at junction 46 (Thurston Road underbridge) will be closed while the work is being carried out with a clearly signed diversion in place.ROUTINE WEED SPRAYING OF MOTORWAY AND TRUNK ROADS CENTRAL RESERVATIONRoutine weed spraying continues next week on the A47 between Peterborough in Cambridgeshire and Acle in Norfolk and the A12 through Essex between the Copdock interchange near Ipswich and the M25 junction at Brentwood. The work is being carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am with lane closures in place past the works area as required. A14 SUFFOLK IMPROVEMENTS AT COPDOCK AND DOCK SPUR INTERCHANGESA scheme to improve the A14/A12 Copdock Interchange near Ipswich and the A14/A154 Dock Spur Roundabout at Felixstowe started on Monday 23 May. The work will be carried out 24 hours a day and will continue for seven months. During the work a temporary 40mph speed limit will be in force at both junctions, with a 50mph speed limit on the junction approaches. At the southern exit from the Dock Spur roundabout the offside lane of the A14 will be closed. There will be lane closures in place most nights and on a limited number of nights there will be convoy working, with dates to be published once confirmed. The scheme has been designed to accommodate additional traffic generated by the Port of Felixstowe expansion and is being funded by the Felixstowe Dock and Railway Company. A14 SUFFOLK - A14 CORRIDOR TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SCHEME Work to install the final stage of the £70m jam-busting technology project for the A14 began in Needham Market in September. The project will see an electronic messaging system operating from the M1 at Catthorpe in Leicestershire through to the Port of Felixstowe. The final stage covers from Needham Market to Felixstowe. Commissioning of the signs and traffic detectors has commenced. The public may notice some of the signs being switched on during this period, they may display ‘sign under test’ or a message stating ‘workforce in road’ with its associated pictogram while testing takes place. It is anticipated that system will be fully commissioned by the end of August. One further total road closure is anticipated to install the final sign. The date of this is yet to be confirmed. The technology will benefit road users by providing them with advanced warnings of queuing or stationery traffic ahead. The signs will also provide information about expected journey times and information on diversions when they are necessary. The use of CCTV cameras will provide information to help improve traffic flow and monitor major incidents including improving response times to incidents by the emergency services.
