Police have recovered drugs and arrested three people after stopping a car in Newcastle.
At 3.50pm on Monday, December 12, police on patrol stopped a vehicle on Hillhead Road in Westerhope. On speaking to the driver, officers became suspicious.
During a search a small bag containing a brown substance was recovered together with a large amount of cash. A 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of controlled drugs.
A subsequent search of a linked address at West Spencer Terrace in nearby Blucher saw a bag with 139 grams - or 5oz - of brown powder, believed to be heroin, recovered together with a small number of cannabis plants.
Two further arrests were made at the address - a man aged 58 and a woman aged 59 - in connection with the recoveries. Enquiries are still ongoing.
DI Dave Culverwell said: "Officers on patrol made a pro-active stop of the vehicle and became suspicious. A search recovered a brown substance and some cash and a further house search recovered more suspected drugs.
"Three people have been arrested and are currently in custody while enquiries continue. Officers will continue to carry out pro-active work to target those suspected of being involved in crime and in this instance it has prevented drugs from potentially reaching the streets of Newcastle.
"Anyone with information about suspected drug use and supply in their community should contact police so we can act on the information."
To report such activity contact police on 101 ext 69191, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
