A34/M40 Junction 9 (Wendlebury) improvementsWork continues this week on a project to improve traffic flow on the A34/M40 Junction 9 interchange near Bicester in Oxfordshire. The scheme will increase the capacity of the junction, improve traffic flow and reduce the safety risk of traffic queuing for the exit on the M40 main carriageway.Narrow lanes are in place on the southbound carriageway of the A34 and a lane closure at the top of the M40 northbound exit slip road. There is a reduced speed limit of 40mph through the area.A34 / M40 Junction 9 Signals UpgradeAs part of the A34/M40 Junction 9 (Wendlebury) Improvement scheme, the existing traffic signals at the interchange are being upgraded to new extra low voltage (ELV) LED lights.Work is being carried out at night, using the existing roadworks for the junction improvement scheme, with overnight lane closures as required. Work started in November, however due to a delay in the programme caused by the adverse weather conditions, the scheme is now expected to be completed in January 2011.A404(M) Western Region Railway BridgeWork to replace the Western Region Railway Bridge on the A404(M) near Maidenhead continues this week. The layout of the traffic management has been changed to allow for the two lanes of traffic travelling on the southbound carriageway to be moved onto the new section of the bridge, allowing work to take place in the centre of the bridge.Two narrow lanes will be available at peak times in each direction, and a 40mph speed limit remains in place. This scheme is expected to be completed summer 2011.M4 Stud Green Access Bridge Maintenance WorkMaintenance work will be carried out on the Stud Green Access Bridge, over the M4 just west of Junction 8/9, next week. The work will include refurbishing the drainage systems, installing new access steps and replacing slope paving as well as maintaining the existing barrier on the bridge.The work is scheduled to start on 10 January 2011 and will take around one week to complete. Work will mainly be carried out 9am and 5pm each day. The hard-shoulder around the bridge will be closed throughout the scheme on both sides of the motorway. There will also be occasional off-peak single lane closures.M4 Oareborough Bridge Maintenance WorkMaintenance work will be carried out on the Oareborough Bridge over the M4 at Hermitage, near junction 13, next week. The work will include refurbishing the drainage systems, installing new access steps and replacing slope paving as well as maintaining the existing barrier on the bridge. Some barriers by the bridge supports will be replaced. The work is scheduled to start on 10 January and is expected to take seven weeks to complete. Work will mainly be carried out between 9am and 5pm each day with a hard shoulder closure in place around the bridge on both sides of the road throughout. There will also be occasional off-peak single lane closures.A34 Bullington Cross ResurfacingThree nights of work to resurfacing the northbound carriageway of the A34 at Bullington Cross start next week. The work will be carried out overnight on Thursday 13 January between 10pm and 5.30am, on Friday 14 January between 10.30pm and 5.30am and again on Monday 17 January between 10pm and 5.30am. Lane markings on the road will also be refreshed. The work will be carried out at night using temporary lane closures and convoy traffic management. The A34 northbound exit and entry slip roads at Bullington Cross will be closed while work is being carried out, with a clearly signed diversion route either via the Whitchurch interchange or the Three Maids Hill Interchange in place.A3 Hindhead Work continues this week on this major improvement scheme. Traffic management at the south end of the scheme was reduced prior to Christmas. The traffic management at the north end of the scheme is also being reduced this week to allow work at A3 Lea Coach Road near Thursley to begin (see below).A3 Lea Coach Road and Thursley Improvement WorksTraffic management is being installed this week ahead of work to improve safety on the A3 closing the gap in the central reservation at the junction with Lea Coach Road and Warren Mere, which starts next week. In order to minimise disruption to road users and for the safety of site staff, the traffic management work will be carried out overnight between 8pm and 5.30am. A 40mph speed restriction will be in place, enforced using speed cameras.The work will also include improvements to the drainage, carriageway, safety barrier, signing and road markings on approach to the junction ofn both sides of the road. two narrow lanes will be available to traffic at all peak times throughout the project. The work is expected to complete by the end of February 2011.Bedhampton Roundabout Improvement WorksNine months of work to improve the junction at the Bedhampton Roundabout (also known as the Rusty Cutter Roundabout), just off junction 5 of the A3(M) in Hampshire, began in October. The improvements will include the introduction of traffic signal controls at the end of the A3(M) and A27 exit slip roads at their junction with the roundabout. New lanes will also be added to the roundabout itself, on the A3(M) southbound exit slip road and eastbound on the link road to the A27 junction. A27 Barrier ReplacementMaintenance work to replace safety barrier in the central reservation on the A27, between junction 12 of the M27 and junction 5 of the A3(M) is expected to complete by the morning of Saturday 8 January 2011, following delays caused by severe weather. In order to keep delays to a minimum, work will be carried out overnight between 10pm and 5.30am, using a temporary lane 3 closure in both directions.A3(M) Drainage MaintenanceMaintenance work to clean the interceptor and soakaway drainage systems along the A3(M) at several locations, both north and southbound, began this week. The work will require some vegetation clearance to allow for suitable access for safe working. In addition, guard rails and fencing will be installed.Work will be carried out during daytime hours (8am – 5pm), using hard shoulder and lane 1 closures as necessary For the safety of site staff, a temporary reduced speed limit of 50mph will also be put into place running past the work site. Work is expected to be complete by Saturday 15 January.A3 Guildford Drainage Improvements & Renewal WorksDrainage improvements along the A3 between the A31 Farnham Road junction and Deerbarn Footbridge begin next week. The scheme will be carried out in two phases.The first phase of the scheme will include drainage maintenance cleaning and CCTV investigation work. To facilitate access for these works, there will be some site clearance of vegetation encroaching into the drainage system. This phase of work is scheduled to begin on Monday 10 January for 2 weeks,.The second phase of the scheme will include drainage repairs and improvement works. This phase of work is scheduled to begin on Tuesday 8 February for around eight weeks. Some off-carriageway activities will be carried out during daytime hours.Between the two phases, there will be occasional overnight lane closures to carry out further CCTV investigation and vegetation management work.Both phases of work will be carried out using overnight lane closures on both the northbound and southbound carriageway between 9pm and 5.30am. There will also be occasional overnight full closures of the A31 northbound slip-road and the Beechcroft Drive central reserve access gap, as and when required. During these closures a clearly signed diversion route will be in place.M3 Mapledurwell – Vegetation ClearanceVegetation clearance begins on the M3, on both carriageways between junctions 5 and 6, near Hook and Basingstoke on Tuesday 11 January for two weeks. The work is being carried out in preparation for a resurfacing scheme planned for the spring. Work will take place between 9.30am – 4.30pm each day using temporary hard shoulder closures where necessary.
