Police have seized a large quantity of a dangerous hallucinogenic drug following a search of a property in Stocksfield.
Acting on information received officers from the Total Policing Task Force executed a warrant at the house on Wednesday morning.
Officers seized a kilo of a drug believed to be Mescaline with an estimated potential street value of £20,000.
The drugs, which are believed to have originated in South America, have now been sent for analysis.
DCI Colin Green of Northumberland Area Command said: "Our neighbourhood teams work hard to prevent illegal substances from being brought into our communities.
"In many cases our officers are acting on information received from local people. We are very grateful for this help and hope it continues.
"We will work with the force's Total Policing Task Force and other partner agencies to tackle the supply of illegal drugs in our communities."
A second property was searched in Prudhoe and drugs paraphernalia was recovered.
Two 20-year-old men have been arrested on suspicion of importation of Class A drugs.
Detective Superintendent Peter Farrell of the Total Policing Task Force said: "Drugs can ruin the lives of those people who take them and the supply of illegal drugs is linked to organised crime and brings harm to our communities.
"This drug in particular is a hallucinogenic which can lead to some dangerous side effects and this seizure demonstrates our commitment to making our communities safer and taking illegal drugs off the streets."
Inspector Dave Nicholson, Northumbria Police Drugs Coordinator said: "I would like to stress that drugs can kill or have a devastating impact upon your health.
"This substance can cause the hallucinatory visions that can lead to nightmares and cause psychotic reactions. Other symptoms range from reduced inhibitions, drowsiness, excited or paranoid states, unconsciousness and seizures. These risks are increased if mixed with alcohol or other stimulants.
"If you become aware of anyone selling or supplying these substances for human consumption, please call police on 03456 043 043. For free advice call the national drug awareness campaign FRANK on 08700 77 6600."
Notes to editors
Mescaline is a naturally occurring psychedelic found in several cactus species in South America. The drug can cause dizziness, vomiting, and in some cases the hallucinatory visions can lead to nightmares and cause psychotic reactions.
