EXTRA SPECIAL
E.T was yesterday (Fri) named the greatest kids' movie of all time.
The 1982 classic, which started a young Drew Barrymore's Hollywood career, told the story of a friendly extra-terrestrial who gets stranded on Earth.
A group of young children look after E.T, famous for the phrase 'E.T, phone home' and battle to get him back to his home planet.
Despite being almost 30 years since the film was released, the classic beat competition from modern favourites including Shrek and Finding Nemo to take the title.
Second place went to Pixar's 1996 hit Toy Story, followed by Disney classic Mary Poppins.
The Lion King and the Wizard of Oz completed the top five.
A spokesman for www.onepoll.com, which carried out the research, said: ''The films featured in the poll span across decades and all have something special about them.
''E.T is a movie the whole family can gather round to watch and it never fails to bring a tear to someone's eye.
''The scenes where he is captured by scientists and flies in the bicycle basket in front of the moon have become iconic.
''No matter how old we are, we always seem to revert back to our childhood ways and enjoy the funny, sad and animated tales we watched when we were young.''
Sixth place in the poll of 3,000 Brits was Bambi, which is still keeping children entertained today, despite first being released in 1942.
Back to the Future, starring Michael J. Fox was voted in at number seven while Shrek, voiced by Mike Myers was at eight.
Ninth place went to Finding Nemo which follows the adventures of clownfish Nemo and his father Marlin after Nemo is snatched from his coral reef home by a diver to add to his fish tank in Sydney.
Fantasy film Labyrinth completed the top ten.
Other classic films to feature in the top 50 include Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at 16, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at 21 and Black Beauty at 32.
But many modern films have made it into the poll, including Ice Age at 19, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone at 21 and Madagascar at 25.
