Millions of British women drink alcohol before having sex - because they lack the confidence in their bodies to make love while sober, a study found yesterday (Tues).
Researchers who studied the link between sexual habits and alcohol consumption among 3,000 women found half preferred sex under the influence.
Women said alcohol helped them lose their inhibitions meaning they were likely to let their hair down and be more adventurous.
It also emerged a staggering 75 per cent of women said they even liked to neck a glass of wine or two before getting into bed with their husband or boyfriend.
And astonishingly, the poll also revealed six per cent of women have NEVER had sober sex.
Yesterday (Tues) Kathryn Lakeland of Femfresh, which carried out the study, said a lack of confidence was a big worry for a lot of women.
And she added: ''These results are a clear indication that British women today are severely lacking in confidence.
''The fact that alcohol plays an integral role in their love lives shows that women are looking for a boost in self-esteem when it comes to their bedroom antics.
"Whilst many women claim they only drink before sex because it is part of the dating process - they’ll have a few drinks over dinner or at the pub - a large percentage will actually refuse to get between the sheets without a bit of Dutch courage.
"This demonstrates that women feel unable to let their hair down and fully enjoy themselves without something to fuel their inhibitions.
"But in doing so many women will be losing self control and this is when drunken one night stands are more likely to occur."
The study also found the average woman has slept with eight men, but was drunk with at least five of them.
And on two of these occasions they can't even remember the man's name the following morning.
It also emerged three quarters claimed they felt more able to let their hair down and go wild with a few drinks inside them.
Four out of ten women have 'always' been a bit tipsy when they have bedded a partner for the first time.
And just over four out of ten claimed alcohol allows them to relax, unwind and lose all inhibitions with a new date.
Worryingly, one in six admitted they 'didn't have the confidence' to sleep with someone when they were stone cold sober.
The also revealed nine out of ten would never date without drinking, and 73 per cent reckoned alcohol gave them confidence they needed for the evening.
More than half of women polled claimed drinking with a prospective partner was 'part of the dating process' so they were bound to be a bit drunk when they had sex.
Most women said they would consider sleeping with a new partner after at least four dates.
One in ten said sex with someone they didn't know particularly well was always better if they were slightly smashed.
It was also revealed millions of women refuse to have sex with their partner until they've had a few drinks.
And, incredibly, 14 per cent of women in a relationship said they couldn't face sleeping with their partner unless they had a couple of glasses of wine beforehand.
Kathryn Lakeland added: "You can almost understand women wanting to gain a little confidence for the first time they are sleeping with someone, but some women admit they need a few drinks before sleeping with someone they are supposed to be in a loving relationship with.
"This really is very worrying and we would suggest that women talk to their partners about their insecurities before hitting the bottle prior to love making."
