A23 Airport Way Streetlighting and Barrier WorkWork which started in October to upgrade street lighting for road users travelling to and from Gatwick Airport continues this week, and is being extended. As well as upgrading the street lighting and safety barriers on the A23 Airport Way and at the north terminal roundabout at Gatwick, the work will be extended to the south terminal roundabout, where the road will be resurfaced and two bridges rewaterproofed. Both sets of work will be carried out side by side and are expected to complete in early April. To carry out the street lighting work, there will be off-peak lane closures at each roundabout. These will be between 9.30am and 4pm on week days.To carry out the resurfacing work on Airport Way and at the north and south terminal roundabouts there will be off-peak lane closures between 9.30am and 4pm on weekdays. Some overnight work may be necessary between 9.30pm and 4am to complete the scheme.Slip roads joining and leaving the A23 will also be resurfaced and these will be closed while the work is carried out. This will take place overnight between 8pm and 4am when traffic flows are lowest. Clearly signed short local diversions will be in place. Advance warning signs will be in place before the work starts at each slip road and it is expected that work at each slip road will take three nights. The re-waterproofing of the two bridges on the A23 Airport Way will be carried out by removing the central reservation and hardening the surface so it can be used as a running lane. Two lanes will therefore be kept open on each carriageway at peak times. The central reservation will be restored when the work is complete.A23 Brighton Approaches Technology ImprovementsWork is continuing to install new monitoring equipment and electronic signs to detect queues and provide information for road users heading towards Brighton on the A23 between Pyecombe Hill and the Patcham junction.CCTV cameras linked to control centres will help the Highways Agency manage traffic on the road and new electronic message signs will give drivers advance warning of any delays, as well as local events which may impact on the road network. This will help road users to plan their journeys. There will be three message signs on the A23 and two on the A27 at the Hangelton junction, to offer further information about traffic conditions along the alternative route into Brighton. The work is expected to be completed by the end of June. While work is being carried out there will be some lane closures on the A23 and one night time carriageway closure on the A27.
