Yesterday I had the chance to accompany Gwyn Burr to Sir John Thursby Community College in Burnley, where she spent an hour talking to students about her role as Sainsbury’s Customer Service and Colleague Director, drawing on her professional life to inform their lesson.
We're delighted to support Teach First Week 2012 and to help
young people in Burnley explore the opportunities that are
available to them for the future. Ensuring young people are ready
and equipped for the world of work is so important. With Gwyn
sharing her experiences with the students, she was also able to
highlight the number of great career opportunities available in
retail for young people with drive, ambition who are prepared to
work hard.
Teach First works in partnership with schools and other
organisations to break the link between low family income and poor
educational attainment, which is stronger in the UK than in almost
any other developed country. It does this by recruiting and
training high calibre, passionate graduates to become effective,
inspirational teachers in schools in challenging circumstances. The
charity is supported by a diverse range of prestigious
organisations who provide vital funding, pro-bono support and
volunteers.
The week runs from 12 to 16 March 2012 and, this year, forms
part of the charity's tenth anniversary celebrations.
