Northumbria Police

27 May 2009

Police investigating a sexual assault on a woman in Jesmond in the early hours of Sunday May 10 have released CCTV images of a couple they need to trace.
The incident happened at around 4.20am, when a 20-year-old woman was walking past the Robinson Library in Newcastle towards the underpass which leads to West Jesmond.
She was approached by a man who pushed her to the ground, punched her in the face and then sexually assaulted her. The woman continued to struggle and shout for help, before the man ran off in the direction of the city centre.
Police are appealing for a couple who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.
The couple, a man and a woman, followed a similar route to the victim, from Grey's Monument in the city centre, along Northumberland Street, past the Civic Centre and close to where the victim was attacked.
Detective Sergeant Alan Alderson, Newcastle CID, said: "This couple followed a very similar route to the victim and it's likely they saw or heard something which could be significant to our enquiry. It's imperative they come forward as soon as possible."
The attacker is described as white, between 20-40 years-old, of medium build, with brown hair, and was wearing a dark jacket or jumper, blue jeans, and dark trainers.
DS Alderson added: "This was a distressing incident for the victim and we are doing everything we can to find the person responsible. Although incidents of this nature are not common we would urge people to stick to well-lit areas while walking at night time."
They, or anyone who knows them, should contact police on 03456 043 043 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
