Reminder to fans

Northumbria Police

8 January 2011

Northumbria Police is reminding football fans attending next weekend’s Wear-Tyne derby of the need to behave inside and outside the stadium.
The force is preparing for the fixture on Sunday January 16 and warns anyone intent on causing trouble that they will be arrested.
There will be a substantial police presence at the match to prevent any disorder and ensure that anyone committing offences is dealt with firmly.
Chief Superintendent Rachel Kearton, Sunderland Area Commander, said: “We know that the overwhelming majority of fans are well-behaved and want nothing more than to attend the game and enjoy the occasion.
“All supporters will receive a warm welcome in Sunderland but anyone intent on causing problems should stay away and let the real fans enjoy their day out.
“We would remind fans they need to behave responsibly both inside and outside the stadium or they risk being arrested and banned from future matches.”
The force has worked closely with both clubs and Sunderland City Council to ensure families can enjoy the match in a safe environment.
Chair of the Safer Sunderland Partnership, Councillor Tom Foster said: “We are working hard to make sure our city continues to be a safer place for us all to enjoy, and that means preventing anti-social behaviour wherever we can.
“The traditional derby match is a huge occasion, and we hope that people remember the friendly rivalry which makes it so special and keep everything good natured.”
Extra officers will be on duty before, during and after the game, and will intervene immediately should they see any behaviour which has the potential to get out of hand.
Chief Superintendent Kearton added: “Anyone who is identified as causing trouble will be arrested, either on the day or afterwards.
“Recent derby games have passed without any significant problems and we look forward to an enjoyable, trouble-free experience on Sunday.”
