Police are appealing for witnesses after a 26-year-old man had his ear bitten in an assault.
It happened at around 3am on Monday, December 27, in Spout Lane, near to the underpass towards Concord, when the man was walking home from Washington Football Club with his mother.
He was approached by another man who has assaulted him. The 26-year-old was taken to hospital with face injuries, including a serious injury to his ear.
The victim's mother, aged 45, also suffered bruising in the attack.
Two people, a 23-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man, have been arrested on suspicion of assault and released on police bail.
Neighbourhood Inspector Paul Barrett, who covers Washington, said: "This appears to be a completely unprovoked attack causing the victim to suffer serious injuries to his ear and I'd urge anyone who may have been in the area at the time to contact police."
Anyone with any information should contact Northumbria Police on 03456 043 043. Or alternatively Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
