Asda slashes £6m off the price of toys with more than a hundred half price or less
Today Asda will send tremors through toyland as it fires the first shot in the Christmas pricing war, slashing the prices of more than a hundred toys by 50 per cent or more across all its 369 stores.
With less than ten weeks to go until Christmas, the move – Asda’s biggest ever toy event – follows research commissioned by the supermarket which showed 35 per cent of parents are worried about the cost and looking for ways to cut back, whilst 20 per cent are anxious about the cost of buying presents for their kids.
The Toy Retailers’ Association, the trade body of toy sellers, is remaining tight-lipped about sales forecasts for the festive season but Asda is moving early to make sure the real winners of the fiercely-contested Christmas toys tug of war are its customers.
Asda is stocking over 700 toys this year and from today more than 100 of these will be on sale for half price or less, wiping more than £6 million of its customers shopping bills.
Included in the offer are must have kids’ favourites such as High School Musical dolls down to just a fiver from £12, a Hot Wheels Seaport Village sailing down to £15 from £30, Disney ride-on cars for £15 down from £30, a 200-piece tub of Mega Bloks for £15 down from £32 and, for those bitten by the X-Factor bug, a Hannah Montana mic with stand for £12 down from £24.
Some of the presents most likely to put a smile on children’s faces are much-loved classic toys such as a large wooden dolls’ house down to £35 from £75 and a 65cm rocking horse for just £30 down from £60. The dolls’ house could save you almost £70 compared to a similar model at Tesco and, in response to customer demand, the supermarket is also selling a furniture pack so for just another £12 (down from £25) your dolls’ house can come fully furnished.
Asda toy buyer, Georgina Cokill comments: “This year we’re bringing a bit of welcome relief to Mum and Dads everywhere as they try to make sure their kids’ wishes come true on Christmas morning but without breaking the bank. With our customers telling us they’re already busy buying presents, we’re giving them the chance to save now so they don’t have to wait for last minute Christmas bargains.”
Sally Whittle, editor of the Great Toy Guide added: “This Christmas will be an interesting one with Woolworths no longer on the high street. With prices and a range like this, Asda is really showing its muscle as a major player in the toy market and the winners in the battle will be the customers.”
The toy offers will also be available from Wednesday (21 October) on direct.asda.com for delivery to your home or to your nearest Asda store.
