Marks & Spencer Unveils Christmas Marketing Campaign

Marks and Spencer

2 November 2010

Marks & Spencer (M&S) today unveils its food, clothing and online marketing campaign for Christmas. Peter Kay joins the line-up of M&S models – including Dannii Minogue, Twiggy, and Jamie Redknapp – for a dance themed clothing ad and Caroline Quentin gives us a glimpse of Christmas parties and Christmas dinner at her home as part of a series of new food TV ads. Online, M&S is launching a dedicated Christmas microsite – www.marksandspencer.com/christmashelper – with handy tools to help guide customers through organising their Christmas celebrations and Myleene Klass fronts M&S TV’s dedicated Christmas videos. All carry this year’s M&S Christmas strap line – “Don’t put a foot wrong this Christmas.” The campaign kicks off on Wednesday (3rd November) with the first airing of the clothing ad on ITV1 in the ad break during Emmerdale and the launch of the microsite. Steve Sharp, Marks & Spencer’s Executive Director for Marketing, said: “This is one of the best Christmas campaigns we’ve ever put together. People who have had a sneak preview of the clothing ad reckon this is the best Christmas M&S ad ever! But we will let the customers decide. “It is very glamorous and lots of fun, truly capturing the spirit of the Christmas party season. I think our customers will really enjoy it, it’s impossible to watch without tapping your feet to it! “This is also the most integrated campaign we’ve ever put together. There’s a seamless transition from TV to online and we have a strong presence across all media, from mainstream TV right through to social media.” Clothing TV campaign
The much anticipated clothing Christmas TV ad stars one of the nation’s favourite comedians, Peter Kay, alongside M&S models Ana Beatriz Barros, Dannii Minogue, Jamie Redknapp, Lisa Snowdon, Twiggy and VV Brown, in a dance themed ad. Peter Kay is in charge of the celebrity-packed dance troupe, choreographing a medley of iconic dances to the Bee Gees classic, ‘You Should Be Dancing’. We see Dannii and Lisa in 1920s style flapper dresses, dancing the Charleston, and Ana Beatriz strutting her stuff in sexy lingerie. Dannii, Lisa and VV are seen in their pyjamas, singing into their hairbrushes, while Twiggy and Peter Kay tussle for the limelight while dancing dressed in slick tuxedos. Jamie Redknapp stars as a DJ, with Dannii, Ana Beatriz, Lisa, VV and Twiggy in glamorous partywear, shimmying in a 70s style dance off. The final scene sees the entire cast united together and surrounded by over 50 dancing Santas, the scene then cuts to the line, “Don’t put a foot wrong this Christmas.” The 90 second ad was shot by RKCRY&R and directed by Vaughan Arnell, famous for his collaborations with Robbie Williams, having directed Rock DJ, Angels, Let Me Entertain You and Supreme. Food TV campaign
Caroline Quentin stars in a series of new M&S food ads this Christmas. Two Christmas-themed ads will be supported by promotional executions throughout November and December. The first Christmas ad breaks in late-November and sees Caroline hosting a Christmas party at home. She brings in “some experts … M&S” to help her with the food and serves treats including Pork Belly Squares, Wrapped Tiger Prawns and Mini Dessert Sandwiches. They help her be “the hostess with the mostest.” The second Christmas ad, due in mid-December, is set on Christmas Day at Caroline’s home. She serves M&S Smoked Salmon, Smoked Haddock Gruyere Fondue, Bronze Turkey and Sirloin on the Bone with all the trimmings. After serving dessert, Caroline declares “now that is a happy Christmas.” Online marketing
M&S’ Christmas push online starts on Wednesday (3rd November) with the launch of www.marksandspencer.com/christmashelper. The dedicated Christmas microsite has been designed to help customers organise and plan their Christmas celebrations. Features which come on stream throughout November include a Christmas gift finder, the Size Detective and a Christmas party and dinner planner that provides inspiration and preparation tips. The Size Detective enables customers to anonymously e-mail friends and family to check what size they are for a certain item, making sure they get the size right, first time. M&S TV – M&S’ own TV channel hosted on www.marksandspencer.com – will feature four dedicated Christmas videos fronted by Myleene Klass. A lingerie buying guide will be followed by videos on lingerie trends this winter, party wear tips and Christmas party food tips with M&S chef Blair Smethurst. M&S TV will also show the new Christmas TV ads and a behind-the-scenes and outtakes video from the set of the M&S Christmas clothing ad. Ends For stills, images and further information
