The average adult tells three lies every day, a study revealed yesterday (Sun).
Researchers found the other half bears the brunt of the deceit followed by colleagues,
friends and the boss.
Most popular lies are location, working hours and whether household chores have been carried out around the house.
The study also found more than a third regularly lie about their workload to make their life easier.
The survey of 3,000 adults was carried out by Twentieth Century Fox to mark the DVD release of Lie To Me Season 2.
A spokesperson from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment said: ''It's quite surprising how many people purposely lie to the people in their lives.
''Most of the time it appears that they are lying just to make their lives easier but getting caught in a lie can never be a good experience.''
The study also found more than a quarter have lied to their partner about how many people they have had sex with.
Nearly all men admitted exaggerating about how many women they have slept with - while the majority of women confess to knocking a few notches off their bedposts.
More than one in four Brits admit to 'playing down' the seriousness of previous relationships and one in ten admitted lying about their current relationship status.
One in five lie about their salary while one in twenty fib about making money playing the stock market.
Seven per cent have even lied about where they have gone to on holiday.
It also emerged four out of ten regularly lie about being sick in order to get a day off work, while one in ten admit lying about a dead relative in order to get time off.

One in ten admitted lying to sell things on eBay while one quarter admitted to breaking something then returning it to a shop claiming it was faulty.
A high percentage also admitted to lying about their age, weight, money and how extravagant their lifestyle is.
The spokesperson added: ''The results show that two thirds of those surveyed didn't think they were very good at lying but they still said they would try and lie if it helped to make their lives a bit easier.
''It's staggering to think that we tell more lies to our loved ones than anyone else. It's scary to think what we all take as the truth which could be a complete lie.
''If only we all had the lie detector skills of Dr. Carl Lightman.''
