Shaping the future of riverside regeneration in Northampton
Northampton’s Becket’s Park marina continues to take shape this week as construction of the moorings begins.
The Environment Agency will start driving 8.4 metre sheet piles to form the entrance to the new marina. These will be followed by 11 metre long circular steel piles which will be driven into the bed of the former boating lake to form supports for the floating pontoons.
Contractors will endeavour to keep noise levels as low as possible during piling, but there is likely to be some disturbance during the two to three weeks this phase of works is expected to take.
Paul Arnold, of the Environment Agency, is project managing the scheme. He said: ‘The piling works mark the start of the construction phase of the marina.
‘People will be able to clearly see that the project is quickly moving forward. It is an exciting phase of an even more exciting project that will help to regenerate the riverside area of Northampton, linking it with the town centre and putting the town on the boating map.’
Once the 46 circular steel piles are in place, the mooring pontoons will be installed and the lake will be refilled with water. The bank that currently separates the marina from the River Nene will then be breached to form the entrance to the new facility. It is expected this will take place in July.
The Environment Agency is constructing the marina on behalf of the Becket’s Park Partnership. The Partnership is made up of the Environment Agency, Northampton Borough Council, the River Nene Regional Park, Northamptonshire County Council, Northamptonshire Enterprise Limited and West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC). WNDC is the largest funding partner contributing £1.8m, with investment also secured from the County Council and Environment Agency.
Michel Kerrou, Chief Executive Officer of the River Nene Regional Park, said: ‘The marina will become a major asset to Northampton, as it forms part of a wider vision that will see the town take its rightful place as gateway to the Nene Valley and the wider countryside.
'It is one of a number of proposals in the Nene Valley Strategic Plan consultation draft, which focuses on the Nene Valley and its hinterland between Northampton and Peterborough, including the Rockingham Forest.
‘The plan provides a framework to improve the quality of the cultural and natural environment, link, protect and create new wildlife habitats, increase accessibility and use of the river and support the local economy of the Nene towns, villages and rural areas’.
Councillor Ben Smith, Northamptonshire County Council cabinet member for regeneration and growth, said: ‘This is a very important part of the project and will be great to see. The marina will have huge benefits for the regeneration of Northampton and will be a real asset for the town and local communities.
‘We’re delighted to have played a part in this partnership by providing essential funding through the Northamptonshire Single Programme. Over the next few months, people will start to see real improvements made.’
Northampton marina will offer 80 moorings, six of which will be for residential use. The remaining berths will be available for short term visitors and pleasure craft requiring long term leases. Moorings will also be available for operators of commercial leisure boats, such as hire boats and water taxis.
As part of long term plans to develop Northampton into The Market City, later phases of the Becket's Park project could include new landscaping, lighting, cafés and restaurants, while providing a busy, exciting link between the town centre and the waterside.
The marina is scheduled for completion in March 2011.
The funding for the marina totals £2,155,845, secured from –
West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (£1,831,000)
Northamptonshire Enterprise Limited/Northamptonshire County Council (£204,845)
Environment Agency (£120,000)
