A34/M40 Junction 9 (Wendlebury) improvementsA project to improve traffic flow on the A34/M40 Junction 9 interchange near Bicester in Oxfordshire is now in its final stages. The scheme will increase the capacity of the junction, improve traffic flow and reduce the safety risk of traffic queuing for the exit on the M40 main carriageway. Narrow lanes are in place on the southbound carriageway of the A34 and a lane closure at the top of the M40 northbound exit slip road. There is a reduced speed limit of 40mph through the area.This scheme is scheduled to be completed by the middle of February 2011.A34 / M40 Junction 9 Signals UpgradeAs part of the A34/M40 Junction 9 (Wendlebury) Improvement scheme, the traffic signals at the interchange are being upgraded to new extra low voltage (ELV) LED lights. Work is being carried out at night, using the existing roadworks for the junction improvement scheme, with overnight lane closures as required. Work is expected to be completed this month.A404(M) Western Region Railway BridgeWork to replace the Western Region Railway Bridge on the A404(M) near Maidenhead continues this week. The first new section of the bridge has been constructed and moved into place and work can now start on building the next section of the bridge deck. Two narrow lanes will be available at peak times in each direction, and a 40mph speed limit remains in place. This scheme is expected to be completed this summer.M4 Ascot Road Bridge Maintenance WorksWork is taking place to strengthen the bridge supports and ensure the continued safety of the Ascot Road bridge which carries the A330 over the M4 motorway between junctions 8/9 and 7. The scheme started on 24 January, and should take 12 weeks to complete. Most work will be carried out overnight between 10pm and 5.30am; however some activities will be carried out during daytime hours.Throughout the scheme there will be 24 hour narrow lane running on both the eastbound and westbound carriageway of the M4, with overnight lane closures on the slip roads at the M4 Junction 8/9 and the main carriageway. Three lanes will remain open on each carriageway during peak hours. During the main phase of work there will be a speed restriction of 50mph, enforced by average speed cameras.M4 Oareborough Bridge Maintenance WorkMaintenance work continues this week on the Oareborough Bridge over the M4 at Hermitage, near junction 13. The work involves refurbishing the drainage systems, installing new access steps and replacing slope paving as well as maintaining the existing barrier on the bridge. Some barriers by the bridge supports will also be replaced. The work started on 17 January and is expected to take five weeks to complete. Work will mainly be carried out between 9am and 5pm each day with a hard shoulder closure in place around the bridge on both sides of the road throughout. There will also be occasional off-peak single lane closures.M4 Grassland MaintenanceWork is taking place at various locations on the M4 between junctions 12 and 15 and between 5 and 6, to maintain grassland areas. The work involves grass cutting, scrub removal, and removal of saplings, and will be carried out using a temporary hard-shoulder closure. The scheme started on Monday 31 January 2011 and is expected to take around three weeks to complete. Traffic Signals MaintenanceWork to replace damaged traffic signal poles and adjust the angle of the traffic lights is taking place at various roundabouts on the M3, M4, M27 and at A404/M40 J4. The programme of work started on Monday 31 January and will take around 5 weeks to complete. Work will be carried out either during the day between 9am and 4pm, or overnight between 10pm and 6am depending on the location. A303 Longparish ResurfacingResurfacing work to repair sections of the road surface will be carried out on the eastbound carriageway of the A303 at Longparish next week. The work is scheduled to start on Monday 14 February for four nights, and will be carried out between 10pm and 6am when traffic flows are lowest. On the main carriageway there will be lane closures and convoy traffic management, with a restricted speed limit of 40mph on the approach to the work site and 10mph as road users pass the work site.A34 Milton Balancing Pond MaintenanceWork continues this week at the pond near to the Milton roundabout on the A34. Work includes clearing debris from the access track and within the pond compound, clearing vegetation from the pond bank, removing in-pond vegetation and de-silting, and replacing the Deep Water sign with a clearer sign and mount on entrance gates. The scheme started on 7 February and is expected to take four weeks to complete. The work is being carried out between 9.30am and 4pm each day.A3 Hindhead Work continues this week on this major improvement scheme. For safety reasons the 40mph speed limit at the north end on both carriageways, and the single lane running on the northbound carriageway, have been extended to connect with the separate works at A3 Lea Coach Road near Thursley. A3 Lea Coach Road and Thursley Improvement WorksWork started in early January to improve safety on the A3 at Thursley. The work involves the closure of the central reservation gaps at this location and an improved junction layout for drivers turning into or out of Warren Mere from or to the A3 northbound carriageway. The work will also include drainage, carriageway, safety barrier, signing and road marking improvements on both sides of the junction. Two narrow lanes will be available to traffic at all peak times throughout the project, with a reduced speed limit of 40mph. Most work is being carried out during the day, although one more night of overnight work is planned on Friday 11 February, while traffic management is altered and new road markings are installed. During the overnight works, lane closures will be in place and traffic will be escorted past the works at 10mph.Work on the southbound carriageway, will also require a temporary closure of Lea Coach Road, during which a fully signed diversion route will be in place. The work is expected to complete by the end of February.Bedhampton Roundabout Improvement WorksA nine month scheme led by Havant Borough Council to improve the junction at the Bedhampton Roundabout (also known as the Rusty Cutter Roundabout), just off junction 5 of the A3(M) in Hampshire, began in October 2010. The improvements will include the introduction of traffic signal controls at the end of the A3(M) and A27 exit slip roads at their junction with the roundabout. New lanes will also be added to the roundabout itself, on the A3(M) southbound exit slip road and eastbound on the link road to the A27 junction. The work is being carried out overnight (10pm – 5.30am) using temporary lane 3 closure in both directions. A3 Guildford Drainage Improvements & Renewal WorksDrainage improvements along the A3, between the A31 Farnham Road junction and Deerbarn Footbridge, continue this week. The scheme is being carried out in two phases.The first phase of work is now complete.The second phase of the scheme includes drainage repairs and improvement works. This phase of work is scheduled to begin on Tuesday 8 February for around eight weeks. Some off-carriageway activities will be carried out during daytime hours.Between the two phases, there will be occasional overnight lane closures to carry out further CCTV investigation and vegetation management work.Both phases of work will be carried out using overnight lane closures on both the northbound and southbound carriageways between 9pm and 5.30am. There will also be occasional overnight closures of the A31 northbound slip road and the Beechcroft Drive central reservation access gap, as and when required. During these closures a clearly signed diversion route will be in place.M27 Drainage MaintenanceMaintenance work to clean the interceptor and soakaway drainage systems at a number of locations, along the eastbound and westbound carriageway of the M27, began on Monday 24 January 2011. The work requires some vegetation clearance to allow for suitable access for safe working. In addition, guard rails and fencing are being installed.Work is being carried out during daytime hours (8am – 5pm), using hard shoulder closures as necessary. Work is expected to be complete on Friday 18 February 2011.A31 Vehicle Activated SignsWork to install Vehicle Activated Signs at a number of locations along the A31 began on Monday 31 January. The signs will help to improve safety by warning drivers of potential queues ahead, informing of vehicle turning movements ahead, and remind drivers of the speed limit. Radar units are also being installed to help the signs work and to establish accurate data about traffic flows, speed and incidents.The work is expected to take four weeks to complete, with approximately three days of work at each location. Most work will be carried out overnight (9pm - 5.30am), with temporary lane closures as necessary. One location, at Poulner Hill, will require an overnight closure of the southbound exit slip road at the junction on two separate nights in mid and late February, for which a fully signed diversion route will be in place. A31 ClosureA number of maintenance and improvement works on the A31, between Roundhouse Roundabout and Bere Regis Roundabout, began on Monday 31 January and will continue until and including Friday 4 March 2011.The work will include resurfacing, patching, white lining, cats-eye replacements, kerb improvements, drainage, sign works, survey works, vegetation clearance and cable repairs, as well as public utilities work.For the safety of site staff and road users, all work will be carried out overnight within a full closure of the A31, in both directions, between Roundhouse Roundabout and Bere Regis Roundabout. The closure will be installed each night (Monday to Friday only) from 10pm – 5.30am. During each closure, one main diversion route around the closure and five secondary diversion routes, for local traffic, will be clearly signed. Some of the local diversion routes will cross the A31 at marshalled crossing points.A27 / A2030 Eastern Road InterchangeWork to repair sections of the carriageway on the A27 westbound over the A2030 Eastern Road roundabout, near Portsmouth, began on Monday 07 February. The work is being carried out at night between 10pm and 6am using a full westbound carriageway closure. The closure will begin just after the A27 westbound exit slip road at Eastern Road and will finish just before the end of the westbound entry slip road from Eastern Road. During the closures, a fully signed diversion route will be in place. The work is expected to take four nights to complete.Parapet Repairs – A3, M3 & M27Bridge parapet repairs will be carried out this week at a number of locations on main routes in Surrey and Hampshire.M27 Junction 5 westbound exit slip road : Friday 11 February A3(M) Junction 5 southbound carriwageway: Monday 14 FebruaryA3(M) Farlington Viaduct (southbound carriageway): Tuesday 15 FebruaryWork at each location is expected to take a single day, and will be carried out over night between 10pm and 6am on the M27 and during the day (9.30am – 3.30pm) on the A3(M).For the safety of site staff and road users, lane and hard shoulder closures will be in place as necessary. M3 Link Road to M27 Westbound CarriagewayEssential maintenance work on part of the M3 link road, that leads traffic to the M27 westbound carriageway (signposted Bournemouth and Southampton Docks), will be carried out on Thursday 17 February. The work will include resurfacing sections of the carriageway and the renewal of existing road markings and cats eyes. In order to reduce disruption to road users and for the safety of site staff, work will be carried out at night (10pm and 6am), during which time the link road will be closed. Fully signed diversion routes will be in place. A3 Drainage Works – Hampshire and SurreyMaintenance work is taking place to clean and repair the drainage system along the A3, both north and southbound, between the Stoke Interchange in Surrey and Horndean in Hampshire. The work will require some vegetation clearance to allow for suitable access for safe working. In addition, guard rails and fencing will be installed to improve safety.The work is scheduled to take place between 7 and 25 February 2011. Work will be carried out overnight between 10pm and 5.30am each night.M27 Emergency Crossing PointWork started this week to install an emergency crossing point in the central reservation barrier on the M27 between junctions 5 and 7, near West End. Work will be carried out during daytime hours, beginning on 8 February and is expected to be completed in early March.Lane 3 will be closed in both directions, with a temporary speed limit of 50mph. Lanes 1 and 2 will be narrowed and traffic will be directed to use the hard shoulder to maintain capacity in both directions, however, delays of 20 minutes may be expected during peak traffic periods.M27 J1-2 Vegetation ClearanceVegetation clearance work started this week along the verges of the M27 between junctions 1 and 2, near Cadnam. Vegetation within three metres of the carriageway edge will be removed and selective woodland thinning, to encourage biodiversity in plant and animal life will also take place. The daytime works, between 10am and 4pm, began on Monday 07 February and are expected to be completed within two weeks.M27 J11 Drainage WorksMaintenance work to clean and repair the drainage system at junction 11 of the M27 near Fareham, including the slip roads, started this week. The work will require some vegetation clearance to allow for suitable access for safe working. In addition, guard rails and fencing will be installed to improve safety.The work is scheduled to take place overnight from 07 to 24 February, between 10pm and 5.30am each night with single lane closures to allow a safe working environment for site staff.A3 Vegetation WorkVegetation clearance and woodland thinning will be carried out along the verges of the southbound A3 carriageway near Petersfield and the A3/A272 Sheet link road, beginning on 14 February for around two weeks.By removing selected trees, the woodland floor will be opened up to natural light, allowing a greater diversity of flora and fauna, which will in turn create a healthier habitat for woodland creatures such as dormice. Work on the A3 will take place during daytime off-peak hours, for approximately one week. A lane 1 closure will be in place, from the A3/A272 junction to one mile west of the junction, to allow a safe working space for site staff.Work on the A272 link road is expected to take ten days and will be carried out overnight (10pm-4am). It will involve closures of the A3 slip roads as well as the link road. Signed diversion routes will be used to assist road users when the slip roads are closed.M3 J4-4a Boundary Fence ReplacementA 170 metre section of the highway boundary fence along the westbound M3 between Junctions 4 and 4a at Farnborough is being replaced. Work is programmed to start on 14 February 2011 for approximately one month. Work will be carried out during daytime hours between 9am and 4pm. M3 Helliers Copse Bridge Joint ReplacementBridge joints are being replaced on the M3 Helliers Copse bridge, which carries the A30 over the M3/A303 slips roads at Dummer. The work will be carried out at off-peak times, both during the day (9am-5pm) and overnight (10pm-5.30am). Work starts on Monday 14 February and is expected to be complete the following day.The bridge joint replacement and some resurfacing work will be carried out to ensure the ongoing safety and reliability of the road. A single lane will be kept open at all times and temporary traffic signals will be used to manage traffic during the work.M3 Minley Bridge Joint ReplacementBridge joints are being replaced on the B3013 Minley Road Bridge over the M3, near junction 4a, at Fleet. Work will be carried out overnight (10pm to 5am) between 15 and 23 February.The work will not affect the motorway traffic, but will involve lane closures and temporary traffic signals on the B3013.
