Work to reduce congestion and improve safety on the A52 near Nottingham starts tomorrow
Government Communications (NDS)
18 July 2011
Motorists will benefit from improved traffic flows through the introduction of technology to co-ordinate new and existing traffic signals along the two-and-a-half mile route which is currently heavily congested at peak periods. To increase capacity there will be some widening of the carriageway at various locations. The eastbound bus lane will also be shortened by around 80 metres on the approach to Priory Island to add capacity for all vehicles. Bus journey times will be unaffected. Additional controlled pedestrian and cycle crossings will also be provided.Highways Agency project manager Len Murray said: "We realise this work will have an impact on the 38,000 vehicles a day that use this section of the A52, which is why the work and lane closures will be limited to off-peak hours and overnight to minimise delays. We have also timed it to take place over the school summer holidays when traffic flows are traditionally lighter. However, there will be narrow lanes and a reduced speed limit 24 hours a day and road users should anticipate delays of between 10 and 30 minutes. Everyone should allow extra time for their journeys, no matter what time of day they travel."Most of the work will take place at junctions along the A52 - the A52/A6007/B5010 Bramcote Roundabout , Thoresby Road, the B6006 Wollaton Road, the A6464 Priory Roundabout and A52/A6154 Queen's Medical Centre Roundabout.Traffic management planned for the first two weeks of the scheme will consist of lane closures on all approaches to Priory and QMC Roundabouts between 9.30am and 3.30pm only. There will be no overnight works or road closures during this period.A 30mph speed limit will be in place 24 hours a day for the duration of the scheme to protect the workforce and the safety of road users.Traffic management will change regularly and will be phased to minimise disruption for road users and local residents. Road users are advised to stay alert to changing road layouts. For more information, motorists can contact the Highways Agency Information Line on 0300 123 5000 or you can find details about these works on the Highways Agency website at www.highways.gov.uk/a52capacity.
