Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was found at the side of the road with serious head injuries in Sunderland.
At around 6.30am this morning, Sunday August 30, police received a report from a member of the public expressing concern for the welfare of a man in Silksworth Rowe, Sunderland.
Police attended and found a 29-year-old local man unconscious by the side of the road suffering from serious head injuries.
Paramedics were called to the scene and the man was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital for treatment but was then transferred to Newcastle General Hospital where his current condition is described as critical.
Police enquiries are currently underway to try and identify how the man was injured and are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time or who may have any information to contact police in Sunderland on 03456 043 043.
Detective Chief Inspector Roger Ford said: " We don't yet know how this man suffered these injuries and we need the publics help to try and find out. I'd urge anyone who was in the Silksworth Rowe area of Sunderland in the early hours of this morning and who may have seen anything to get in touch with police as soon as possible".
