CHOC IS TOP
Legendary chocolate-maker Cadbury was yesterday (Sun) hailed as the nation's best-loved household brand.
The 186-year-old confectionary giant came top of the pile despite recent controversy surrounding current owner Kraft's plans to shut the Bristol factory and move it to Poland.
The U.S cheese giant was forced to issue a public apology to the 400 workers who will lose their jobs after bosses reneged on a promise to keep the Somerdale plant open.
But last week it was announced a chain of 60 Cadbury cafes are set to open up around the UK within the next five years, much to the delight of its chocolate-loving customers.
Cadbury's beat Heinz into second place in the poll of 4,000 Brits.
Heinz brands is renowned for presence on the country's dinner tables thanks to products such as tomato ketchup, baked beans - which carry the 'Beanz Meanz Heinz' advertising slogan - and various sauces.
Coca Cola, the biggest selling soft drink in history, was third. Coke was created by Dr. John S. Pemberton in 1886 and first sold in Selfridges and the London Coliseum.
Fairy was fourth and Walker's - whose crisps were made famous through ads featuring Gary Lineker - was fifth.
A spokesman for retail loyalty discount card www.mortgage-miles.com which carried out the study, said: ''Brands such as Cadburys, Heinz, Kellogg's, Coca Cola and Marks & Spencer have been household names for years.
''Chocolate and Cadbury go hand in hand and the likes of Dairy Milk, Crunchies and Twirls are loved by the nation.
''Nothing beats slumping in the sofa with your favourite choccie with a cup of tea and watching television.
''So when it was announced the British institution had been sold to USA giants Kraft, it was as though we had got rid of part of our heritage and there was uproar amongst the public.
''We have become used to the reliability, taste and the familiarity of each of these brands, with its packaging and logos recognised around the world.
''And many people would be reluctant to give them up.''
Other brands to make the list include Bisto, Kellogg's, custard-makers Birds and Vaseline.
Marks and Spencer was the only high street store to make the list while Calpol - makers of children's medicine - were the only pharmaceutical entry.
Andrex - made popular thanks to their adverts featuring a playful white labrador puppy - also made the top 20 as did sauce makers HP.
The hall of fame was completed by PG Tips, McVities, Ribena and Nescafe coffee.
The survey found six in ten reckon they get their money's worth with branded products and half honestly find them better than cheaper alternatives.
A quarter admitted they are too embarrassed to display budget items when guests are round their house.
