The care home operator Southern Cross has announced that it will close and its landlords will take over its 750 care homes.
In response, a Department of Health spokesperson said:
"Government's primary concern in this matter remains the welfare of the residents living in Southern Cross homes. Whatever the outcome, no-one will find themselves homeless or without care. We will not stand by and let that happen.
"We appreciate that recent events and media speculation have caused concern to residents in Southern Cross care homes and their relatives and families. Today's announcement does not change the position of residents. The company has announced its intention to ensure a smooth transition of homes to landlords and new operators. We welcome the continued focus on maintaining continuity of care and to transfer care home staff to new operators on their current terms. The Care Quality Commission will continue to monitor the services provided. We have emphasised to CQC the importance of ensuring that the homes continue to comply with regulations and safety and quality requirements.
"Government has been clear from the outset that all parties must work together to agree on a plan that will safeguard the continuity and quality of care of residents. We have been in constant contact over the course of discussions and remain ready to talk to all parties."
