4 January 2011
As part of the work to widen the M25 between junctions 16 and 23 north-west of London from three lanes to four, the Highways Agency needs to install gantries on the carriageway. The anti-clockwise M25 will be closed overnight between junction 22 for St Albans and junction 21a for Abbots Langley for this work to be completed safely. The work will take place between 11pm on Saturday 08 January 2011 and 6am on Sunday 09 January 2011. A clearly signed diversion route will be in place.Work to widen the M25 from junction 16 to 23 started in May 2009. The stretch between junction 16 and junction 18 has already been widened to four lanes and is fully open to traffic.Geoff Chatfield, Highways Agency project manager, said:“Installing the gantries at night keeps delays for road users to a minimum. The work is part of an overall project to increase the number of lanes on the M25, tackling congestion and improving traffic flows to ensure reliability in journey times and safety for road users.”A diversion route will be signposted from junction 22 via the A1081 to the A414 (and M10 for access to the M1 northbound) and A405 to junction 21a and to join the M1 southbound.Residents in the area of the diversion route are advised there may be extra traffic on these routes during the closure.Widening this section of the M25 is due to be completed before the Olympics in 2012.Further overnight closures on Saturday nights in January are scheduled for the remaining gantry installations.
