Horses killed on road after wire fence cut

Northumbria Police

27 October 2009

Police in Gateshead are investigating an incident which led to the deaths of four horses. It happened just after 7pm on Monday, October 26, on Barlow Lane, Winlaton. The horses were in a field off Barlow Lane and strayed onto the road after the wire of the electric fence surrounding the field was cut. Two horses were killed outright after being in a collision with a van and two others had to be humanely destroyed at the scene. The van driver suffered a head injury which is not believed to be serious. Police believe the electric fence had been deliberately cut and are carrying out enquiries to find the person responsible.
Inspector Jamie Pitt, head of the outer west Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "This was extremely distressing for all concerned. These horses were in a secure field and would never have gone anywhere near the road if the wire hadn't been cut. We need to find out who was responsible."
Anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area last night or has information about the incident should contact Northumbria Police on 03456 043 043 and ask for the outer west neighbourhood policing team stationed at Whickham or ring the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
