Blyth summer drink campaign a success

Northumbria Police

26 October 2009

POLICE in Blyth have seized almost 100 litres of alcohol from youths during a summer crackdown on underage drinking and disorder.
The Blyth neighbourhood policing team took to the streets targeting youngsters drinking and causing anti-social behaviour in the area, in response to residents' concerns about alcohol-related anti-social behaviour. This had been identified as a Neighbourhood Priority during local PACT meetings
Officers carried out high visibility patrols in the Croft and Cowpen Quay areas as part of the operation which ran during June, July and August.
They sent 108 Anti-Social Behaviour Notices to the parents of youngsters stopped by police, explaining what their children had been doing, and officers made 3 arrests for breach of ASBOS'.
The drink recovered included 35 cans of lager, 3 litres of vodka, 16 litres of wine, 38 litres of cider, 2 litres of gin and 2 litres of alcopops.
Neighbourhood Sgt Gary Neill said: "We are aware that alcohol related youth anti-social behaviour is a cause for concern within our community. And this shows that the Blyth Neighbourhood Team is listening to local residents and businesses and taking positive action.
"We had officers out on patrol in key areas at key times and the results have been very positive.
"The parents of youths who have been drinking must be aware of this fact when they return home and I urge parents to get to know where their children are going and what they are doing. We must all work together to reduce alcohol consumption by young people.
The neighbourhood team holds regular meetings and public forums in the Blyth area and anyone wishing to raise concerns about the area can contact their local team on 03456 043 043.
