9 January 2010

Police looking for a missing Newcastle woman have found a woman lying in the snow. She was taken to hospital for treatment but has subsequently died.
The 42-year-old woman was found by a passer-by in a wooded area near Newbiggin Hall shops and Westerhope Comrades Social Club at 10.59 am on Saturday, January 9.
Emergency services were called and the extremely cold woman received medical care at the scene before being taken to Newcastle General Hospital where she received treatment but died at 3pm.   The woman was reported as missing by her family on Friday, January 8.  She left the family home at 7pm saying she was going for a walk and when she failed to return by 11.30pm, her family reported her missing to police.
Officers had been carrying out enquiries to try to find the woman.  The force helicopter and police dogs were also used to assist searches.
Superintendent Paul Orchard said: "We don't know how long she was lying in the snow before she was found on Saturday morning.  So we are appealing for help from the public to see if anyone saw her walking around the area.
"If anyone saw her between Friday, January 8, from 7pm to Saturday, January 9, at 11am please contact the police straightaway on 03456 043 043 ext 62926 or ring the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
"We would also wish to remind people of the dangers of walking in the current weather conditions of deep snow and very cold temperatures, particularly at night."
When found she was wearing a dark coloured knee length anorak jacket, light coloured trousers and trainers.  She is described as 5ft 7" tall, and of slim build.
