Fatal collision in Newcastle

Police are appealing for witnesses to a fatal collision involving a single car on Chillingham Road in Newcastle on Thursday, April 1 at 6.29pm.
The car an Audi A4, driven by a 67-year-old Newcastle man, was travelling northbound on Millers Road 15 metres north of the roundabout with the junction of Chillingham Road and Shields Road when, for reasons yet to be established, it collided with a Ford transit van which was parked at the side of the road on Millers Road.
The Audi then continued north across the roundabout junction with the Fossway before mounting the kerb on Chillingham Road before hitting a bus stop where it came to rest.
The driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to Newcastle General Hospital where he died a short time later, the front seat passenger a 63-year-old woman was also taken to Newcastle General Hospital where she was treated for a broken arm and leg.  Chillingham Road and the Fossway were closed until 8.10pm to allow for the collision to be investigated by motor patrols officers.
