Waitrose is ahead of the game as it launches the first British asparagus of the season today. This early UK-grown asparagus, which is considered to be the best in the world, has been grown in Worcestershire. Available in the Waitrose Foodhall at John Lewis stores in both Oxford Street and Bluewater, the asparagus will be the first UK-grown crop to be sold this year. The crop will be personally couriered by the supplier into store, to ensure customers can enjoy the taste of the freshest new season asparagus as soon as possible. Kate Prall, Waitrose vegetable buyer, says: ‘This early season asparagus is exciting as we are offering the first taste of spring to our customers. We have grown a new variety which does not become dormant during winter like most types, so it is available much earlier in the year. Grown in a glasshouse to protect the root system from the British winter, this crop has not been heated, like other very early UK season asparagus.’ The super early asparagus has been grown by Michael Porter in Worcestershire, who is part of a known group of British farmers supplying Waitrose. The glasshouse system protects the asparagus during the colder months, while growth is slower. In late December the fern is cut off and covered the soil in fleece to increase the speed of growth.
