Man assaulted in Wallsend

Northumbria Police

4 June 2009

Police are appealing for witnesses to an assault on a 28-year-old local man on Station Road, Wallsend, in North Tyneside next to the Rachita Tandoori food takeaway, on the junction of Victoria Avenue and Station Road on Monday, June 1 between 8pm and 8.30pm.
The man was walking along the road with two friends, a man and a woman, when he encountered a group of six or seven young men who engaged him in conversation and then set upon him. He was assaulted, punched and kicked and suffered a fractured jaw,  lost teeth and severe facial bruising.
The offenders then made off in an unknown direction after being chased away by an unknown member of the public and we'd appeal for this individual to come forward to speak to officers.
The injured man was taken to North Tyneside General Hospital and transferred to Newcastle General Hospital where he has undergone surgery.
Detective Sergeant Nigel Howitt, North Shields CID said: "This was a cowardly and unprovoked attack by a group of men on this man.  He has sustained serious injuries and we are appealing for anyone who was in the area to contact us straightaway. Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact Northumbria Police on 03456 043 043 ext 63374 or ring the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
