Sainsbury's has appointed Roger Burnley to the new role of retail and logistics director on the company's operating board.  Roger was previously supply chain director. This move consolidates responsibility for the supermarket's store and depot operations and will be effective from April 21.
In January 2008 it was agreed that Ken McMeikan, previously retail director, would take a sabbatical. Ken has decided to take up the position of chief executive of Greggs plc, effective from June 2008, and will therefore not be returning to Sainsbury's.
Justin King, Sainsbury's chief executive said: "Over the past three years Ken has made a significant contribution to our recovery and I wish him every success for the future. Following Ken's decision, I believe that this is an appropriate moment to now bring the management of our retail and logistics operations together. Huge progress has been made in our performance during the past three years of our Making Sainsbury's Great Again plan. This move will allow us to continue to improve the performances of both our stores and depots, ensuring we deliver an even better service to our customers.
"Roger has 20 years experience in retail, both in food operations at Asda and also within non-food at Matalan and B&Q. His breadth of experience means he is well qualified to lead his new team and bring about further improvements as we continue to move from recovery to growth."
