A404 and A308(M) Sign RepairsWork to repair and replace worn out road signs will be carried out at various locations along the A404 and A308(M) throughout May. Work will be carried out using overnight lane closures between 9pm and 6am. A404(M) Western Region Railway BridgeA scheme to replace the Western Region Railway Bridge on the A404(M) near Maidenhead continues this week. A second section of newly constructed bridge has been successfully slid into place, and road layout has been adjusted to allow the team to work on the bridge by the northbound carriageway. Two narrow lanes remain available at peak times in each direction, and a 40mph speed limit remains in place, with additional off-peak restrictions as required.There will be a full closure of the A404(M) in both directions from 2pm on Saturday 14 May until 5am on Monday 16 May while demolition work is carried out on sections of the old bridge supports.The scheme is expected to be completed this summer.A404(M) Junction 9a Drainage MaintenanceWork to replace the filter drain and clear minimal vegetation at junction 9a on the A404(M) is scheduled to start on Monday 9 May for three nights between 10pm and 6am each night, when traffic flows are lowest.While work is being carried out the northbound exit and entry slip roads will be closed with clearly signed diversion routes in place, diverting traffic via junction 9b or via the M4 Junction 8/9 roundabout.M4 Junction 13 – 14 Winterbourne Bridge Safety repair work on the bridge which carries the M4 motorway over the B4494 between junctions 13 and 14 near Newbury in Berkshire continues this week. Work started on Monday 3 May, and will take around 21 weeks to complete. Narrow lanes will be in place, including some contraflow and hard shoulder running on a 2.5 mile section of road around the bridge, with a 50mph speed limit, enforced by average speed cameras.This week, the westbound entry slip-road at M4 Junction 13 will be closed overnight for two nights between 10pm and 6am on Wednesday 11 May and Thursday 12 May 2011, to allow for resurfacing work to take place.Safety barrier maintenance – various routesWork to inspect and re-tension safety barriers across motorways and major roads in central southern England continues this week. Depending on the location, work will be carried out during off-peak daytime hours or overnight using temporary lane closures, with occasional overnight slip road closures, which will be confirmed in this bulletin. The work is expected to be complete in October.Motorway Maintenance – Traffic Merging SignsAs part of an ongoing signage review, the Highways Agency will replace the merge signs at various locations on the A3, A31, A34, A303, A404 and M27. The work started on Monday 11 April for round five weeks, and will be carried out at night, between 9pm and 5:30am, using lane closures.A3 Hindhead Work continues on this major improvement scheme. There is a 50mph speed limit on the southern approach where the road tapers from two lanes into one and a 40mph speed limit at the northern approach.Bedhampton Roundabout Improvement WorkA nine month scheme led by Havant Borough Council to improve the junction at the Bedhampton Roundabout (also known as the Rusty Cutter Roundabout), just off junction 5 of the A3(M) in Hampshire, began in October 2010. The improvements will include the introduction of traffic signal controls at the end of the A3(M) and A27 exit slip roads at their junction with the roundabout. New lanes will also be added to the roundabout itself, on the A3(M) southbound exit slip road and eastbound on the link road to the A27 junction. Further information on this scheme can be found at www.dyerandbutler.co.uk.)M27 Bridge Maintenance and ImprovementsEssential maintenance work to replace bridge bearings and to improve the condition of three bridges that cross over the M27 between junctions 8 and 10 is ongoing. The three bridges are: Swanwick Lane Bridge, Botley Road Bridge and Whiteley Lane Bridge.The work began on Monday 28 February and is expected to take four months to complete. Work will be carried out each weekday, mostly during the day, with occasional overnight work as necessary. To enable the work to be carried out safely, the hard shoulder of the M27 around each of the bridges will be temporarily closed. Some overnight lane closures on the M27 will also be required as necessary. On the bridges themselves, temporary traffic lights will be installed. Whiteley Lane overbridge will be closed for two nights as part of the work while it is resurfaced, with a clearly signed diversion route in place.M3 J3-4a Blackwater Valley and Hawley Rail South Bridge Joint ReplacementBridge joints are being replaced this week on the Blackwater Valley Viaduct and Hawley Rail South bridge at junction 4 of the M3 near Frimley. The work will involve replacing the bridge beams and movement joints, as well as replacing the existing safety fencing in the central reservation.Work started on 21 March for approximately ten weeks, and will mostly be carried out during off-peak hours during the day. Narrow lanes will be in place throughout the scheme, and the hard shoulder will be used to run traffic under the bridge. A 50mph speed limit will be in place, enforced by average speed cameras. There is a footpath under the Hawley Rail South Bridge, which will remain open throughout the work. If temporary restrictions are required on the foot path, pedestrians will be escorted past by site staff.A3 Hurtmore Interchange – High Friction SurfacingA new anti-skid surfacing will be installed this week on the southbound exit slip road at the Hurtmore Interchange, near Godalming in Surrey . The work will be carried out using five overnight closures, between 10pm and 6am, starting on Friday 06 May. An additional night of work will also take place on Wednesday 18 May 2011. During the closures a clearly signed diversion route will be in place.A27/A3023 Eastbound – High Friction SurfacingA new anti-skid surfacing will be installed this week on the eastbound exit slip road of the A27, leading to the A3023, near Hayling Island in Hamsphire. The work will start on Tuesday 10 May for five consecutive nights and will be carried out using five overnight closures between 10pm and 6am. An additional night of work will also take place on Friday 20 May . During the closures a clearly signed diversion route will be in place.M3 Junction 13 Northbound – High Friction SurfacingA new anti-skid surface will be installed this week on the northbound entry slip road at of the M3 at junction 13 near Eastleigh, in Hampshire. The work will start on Friday 6 May for four nights between 10pm and 6am, when the slip road will be closed. An additional night of work will also take place on Wednesday 18 May. During the closures a clearly signed diversion route will be in place.
