Improvements to the layby on the northbound carriageway at Boreham will start on Wednesday 5 January and will start at the Stratford St Mary layby on Tuesday 11 January. Work to downgrade to emergency use only the layby on the northbound carriageway near Bentley will start on Tuesday 18 January. The Birchwood layby on the southbound carriageway will be closed permanently to all traffic from Friday 21 January. All work will be carried out overnight between 9pm and 6am and will involve single lane closures. A11 KETTERINGHAM, JUNCTION IMPROVEMENTS UPDATE The southbound carriageway of the A11 will be closed overnight on Wednesday 5 January, between 10pm and 6am, weather permitting. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the B1172. A temporary 50 mph speed restriction is in place 24 hours. The scheme to improve safety at the junction of the A11 and Station Lane near Ketteringham, south of Norwich, started on Monday 22 November. The work will involve closing the central reserve gaps, widening the southbound carriageway of the A11 and amending the Station Lane east junction. There will also be improved facilities for pedestrians and cyclists at the junction. The work will be carried out between the hours of 7am and 7pm Mondays to Saturdays, with no traffic management in place on the northbound carriageway between 7am and 9am on weekday mornings. Lane 2 closures will be in place on the southbound carriageway 24 hours while work takes place. ONGOING WORK M1 J10 TO J13 BEDFORDSHIRE – HARD SHOULDER RUNNING SCHEMEOn Tuesday 4 January the onslip and offslip roads at Junction 11 on the southbound carriageway will be closed overnight. A contraflow is in operation on the M1 between Junctions 12 and 13. During peak hours three lanes will remain open in both directions. A contraflow remains in operation from north of Junction 11 to Junction 10, diverting a lane of southbound traffic onto the northbound carriageway. Traffic on the northbound carriageway is using the hard shoulder as an additional lane. This allows for three lanes of traffic in each direction during the day whilst work takes place. This will continue until July 2011. There are currently hard shoulder closures between Junctions 11 and 12, with a speed restriction of 50 mph. This 50mph speed restriction is now in place 24 hours a day between Junctions 10 and 13. The enforced 50mph speed limit is there for the safety of the travelling public and the workforce on site. This traffic management is in place for the work on the Hard Shoulder Running scheme to reduce congestion and improve safety on the 15 mile stretch of the M1 in Bedfordshire. Motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys whilst the road works are taking place. As part of the scheme, the Highways Agency will also upgrade junctions 11 (Dunstable) and 12 (Toddington).A1 BEDFORDSHIRE LIGHTING IMPROVEMENT SCHEME A scheme to replace street lighting on both carriageways of the A1 between the Black Cat roundabout and Sandy began on Monday 6 December. The work will also include installation of safety barriers and maintenance work. It will be carried out during both daytime and night time hours as follows: on the northbound carriageway between 6.30am and 4pm and on the southbound carriageway between 8am and 6.30pm; overnight between 8pm and 6am on both carriageways. There will be lane closures with a temporary 50mph speed restriction in place. From January there will also be side road closures with traffic diversions in place overnight. A12 LOWESTOFT CONSTRUCTION OF PUFFIN CROSSINGA scheme to install a pedestrian crossing on the A12 in Lowestoft started on Monday 22 November. It will be located on the A12 between Hollingsworth Road junction and Gunton Church Lane junction and is expected to be completed by mid February 2011. Some work will be carried out overnight, weather permitting, between 10pm and 6am, with lane closures controlled by temporary traffic lights and a speed limit of 10mph in place through the works area. A ‘puffin’ crossing uses sensors to detect people on the crossing which then adjust the red traffic signal accordingly. A14 CAMBRIDGESHIRE SURVEY WORKWork to survey the drainage system along the whole length of the A14 started on Monday 1 November. Currently survey work is taking place between Catworth (junction 21) and Huntingdon (junction 23), and between Stow cum Quy (junction 35) and Newmarket (junction 37). The survey work is being carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am, Mondays to Fridays, with lane closures as necessary. A14 CAMBRIDGESHIRE RESURFACING WORK – OVERNIGHT CLOSURESWork to repair and resurface the eastbound carriageway of the A14 between the St Ives interchange (junction 26) and the junction of the A14/M11 at Girton started on Monday 13 December. The work, which will be carried out over seven nights, will be on the eastbound carriageway and will involve an overnight closure between 9pm and 6am week nights only. There will be a clearly signed diversion for eastbound traffic off the A14 at Brampton Hut onto the A1 southbound to St Neots, and then eastbound on the A428 to rejoin the A14 at the Girton interchange. A14 ORWELL BRIDGE BEARINGS REPLACEMENT WORKWork is being carried out in preparation for bearings replacement work in February at Pier 5 on the Wherstead side of the Orwell Bridge, which carries the A14 over the River Orwell near Ipswich, Suffolk. There are currently Lane 2 closures on the east and westbound carriageways overnight and a temporary 50mph speed limit as required for safety reasons over the bridge in both directions, with average speed cameras in place. Two lanes will be open in both directions during daytime hours and the temporary 50mph speed limit will remain in place. The scheme is due for completion by end of March 2011. A14 SUFFOLK SAFETY BARRIER RENEWAL WORK NEAR STOWMARKETWork began on Wednesday 3 November to renew the safety barriers on Cedars Interchange (junction 50), near Stowmarket. In order to carry out the work there will be overnight single lane closures both east and westbound at the interchange. The work will take place between 8pm and 6am Mondays to Fridays only and is expected to be completed by end January, weather permitting. There will be a traffic management switch overnight on Thursday 6 January, weather permitting, when the 50mph speed limit will move from the westbound to the eastbound carriageway. A14 SUFFOLK - A14 CORRIDOR TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SCHEMEWork to install the final stage of the £70m jam-busting technology project for the A14 began in Needham Market in September. The eventual project will see an electronic messaging system operating from the M1 at Catthorpe in Leicestershire through to the Port of Felixstowe. The final stage covers from Needham Market to Felixstowe. There will be overnight closures of the A14 while the overhead Variable Message -Signs (VMS) and traffic monitoring sensors are installed in the carriageway. The technology will benefit road users by providing them with advanced warnings of queuing or stationery traffic ahead. The signs will also provide information about expected journey times and information on diversions when they are necessary. The use of CCTV cameras will provide information to help improve traffic flow and monitor major incidents including improving response times to incidents by the emergency services. A47 DEREHAM LAYBY IMPROVEMENT SCHEMEA scheme to upgrade the layby on the A47 westbound at Etling Green Junction near North Tuddenham started in November. The work will be carried out between 9am and 5pm on the layby itself but any work requiring lane closures will take place overnight, from 8pm to 6am, weather permitting. There will also be an overnight closure of the A47 westbound for three nights only, between Fox Lane junction and Etling Green junction, dates to be confirmed. There will be a clearly signed diversion route via Fox Lane, B1110, B1147, Norwich Road and Mattishall Road. The work is due for completion by the end of January.
