New data has shown that UK shopping habits are evolving: the weekly ‘big shop’ has been replaced with a month end, pay day trolley dash, with store sales seeing people spend up to 37% more than average at the tills.
New figures from Morrisons show that the final weekend of the month sees a 52% uplift in bulk buy shopping for household essentials. The products most likely to pile up in our trolleys at payday are loo roll (83%), toiletries (70%) and cleaning products (62%), closely followed by frozen (47%), with treats such as alcohol (35%) and sweets (11%) surprisingly lagging behind in the bulk buy chart. This extra big monthly shop can take an average of 50 minutes and isn’t something to tackle alone – over 60% of those asked said they needed at least one extra pair of hands to cart home their massive load. Although as a nation we’ve learned to like fresh to be really, really fresh – as 35% of us admit to doing mini ‘top up shops’ every week - we do tend to be ‘Mother Hubbards’ on the final days of the month, with a quarter of the nation having nothing at all in the fridge by this point; this results in a third (32%) eating ‘weird combinations’ and a fifth (19%) choosing to fast completely until a pay packet hits their bank account. So, in response to this trend to spend big at pay day, Morrisons has identified the most common bulk buys and reduced them in time for May’s pay packet. Richard Hodgson, Group Commercial Director , comments: “The rise in the cost of living and our increasingly time poor society has seen that people are shifting from big weekly shops, instead opting for one bulk buy, timed around pay day, supplemented with quick trips through the week during the rest of the month. Our stores rise to the challenge to ensure we maintain key product supplies for this time and offer the very best deals – but also to keep an excellent, daily fresh offering for those, now crucial, ‘top up shops’!”
