Appeal for witnesses after fatal collision

Northumbria Police

20 February 2009

Police are appealing for witnesses to a crash on the A1 at Felton in which two men died. The collision happened just after 7am on Thursday, February 19, about half a mile south of the start of the dual carriageway. The incident involved a white Nissan lorry and a white Volkswagen panel van. The driver of the lorry, 52-year-old Ian Thompson, of Embleton, Alnwick, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the van, and 42-year-old David Clarkson of New Addington, Croydon, was taken to Wansbeck General Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8.36am. Officers investigating the collision believe passing motorists could have valuable information. PC Steve Millett of Bedlington Motor Patrols said: "We are trying to build up a picture of exactly what happened that morning and we are keen to hear from anyone who was on the road at the time. "We would particularly like to hear from the occupants of a red R registration Ford Escort which we believe was travelling north on the A1 just behind one of the vehicles immediately before the crash." Anyone who was in the area at the time or has any information is asked to contact Bedlington Motor Patrols on 03456 043 043.
