Police are appealing for witnesses following an assault on a 25-year-old local man in North Shields.
The incident happened at 2am in the early hours of Wednesday, June 23 on a footpath near Meadowell Metro Station on Waterville Road in North Shields. The man and his girlfriend were walking along the path when they encountered a group of five men who chased them. The victim fell to the ground and was attacked suffering facial injuries.
He was taken to North Tyneside Hospital, his injuries are not life threatening, and later transferred to the RVI in Newcastle for further treatment.
Police are appealing for witnesses to this incident and are asking for anyone who was in the area at the time who may have seen or heard anything suspicious to contact police.
Anyone with information is asked to contact North Shields Neighbourhood Policing Team on 03456 043 043 ext 69191 or ring the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Extra neighbourhood patrols are being carried out in the area to reassure residents.
