Sainsbury's will open the doors to a new store in Gornal Wood on 19th June 2009. The 3,000 square foot store was acquired from Somerfield in May 2009 and boasts a new bakery, fresh floral arrangement and ATM. Twenty-six colleagues from Somerfield have transferred to join the Sainsbury's team.
Long-serving colleague, Celia Day will perform red carpet duties and cut the ribbon to officially open the new supermarket at 9am on the 19th. Mrs Day, from Gornal Wood, has recently retired after working at the store for 20 years when it was owned by Somerfield.
She will be joined at the opening by children from local school Red Hall Primary. The children will be presented with Active Kids equipment to use during P.E lessons and playtime.
Store manager Eddie Gardner said: "We're proud of our new store but the best part of opening is getting to know the local community. It's been great meeting new people and we're looking forward to making a positive difference. We've already started this process by working with Red Hall Primary and it's great that kids from the school are going to liven up us oldies at the opening!"
Doors will open at 9.00am and the first customer in store will receive a bouquet of flowers from Eddie Gardner.
Notes to editors:
Sainsbury's currently has 504 supermarkets and 319 convenience stores
The Gornal Wood store address is: 18 Louise Street, Gornal Wood, DY3 2UB
